Il Covid si porta via uno dei rappresentanti eccelsi della fotografia nazionale ed internazionale: Giovanni Gastel, a soli 65 anni. I suoi scatti sono sempre stati sinonimo di bellezza e hanno fatto la storia della moda e dei personaggi del nostro tempo.
Uomo gentile, educato, grande professionista, nipote di Luchino Visconti, aveva deciso di fare della sua passione la sua professione, accantonando la Laurea.
Un uomo di altri tempi, con un senso estetico eccelso, che lo aveva portato a collaborare con Vogue Italia, Edimoda e i magazine Mondo Uomo e Donna. Una carriera che ha camminato di pari passo con il boom del Made in Italy tra gli anni '80 e '90, firmando le campagne pubblicitarie per luxury brand, top di gamma, da Versace a Missoni, da Ferragamo a Krizia ed in Francia con Dior, Nina Ricci e Guerlain, fino ad approdare nel Regno Uniti e Spagna.
La sua prima mostra personale nel 1997, alla Triennale di Milano, curata dal critico Germano Celant. Il fotografo del romanzo "Sotto il vestito niente", era a lui ispirato, come la relativa saga cinematografica.
Quarant'anni di una straordinaria carriera che lo avevano inserito nello star system mondiale al pari di fotografi come Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Mario Testino, Oliviero Toscani e Giampaolo Barbieri.
Si era avvicinati al ritratto solo alla fine degli anni 2000, con una predilezione per gli scatti in bianco e nero.
L'ultima sua mostra in ordine di tempo proprio a Roma, al MAXXI, "The people I like", duecento ritratti dell'anima di altrettanti personaggi famosi: da Barack Obama a Marco Pannella, da Germano Celant a Ettore Sottsass, da Bebe Vio a Luciana Littizzetto, da Monica Bellucci a Miriam Leone, da Vasco Rossi a Tiziano Ferro e molti altri. Come lo stesso Gastel aveva dichiarato "The people I like racconta il mio mondo, le persone che mi hanno trasmesso qualcosa, insegnato, toccato l’anima", perché per lui la fotografia non era un lavoro ma una vera e propria necessità.
Le sue ultime foto sono di Malika Ayane per Chiara Boni, un connubio di amiche e talenti inimitabili come le aveva definite.
L'Italia perde un'eccellenza nel campo dell'arte e della cultura che sarà difficile da dimenticare.
